Smartphones are everywhere and often times, we (including our students!) are so dependent on them, we cannot leave our houses without them! So, why don't we make full use of these smartphones to collect data or conduct science experiments!
That's what some of our Physics teachers did during our 1-day workshop on 30th Jan 2019. Using the Phyphox app that makes use of a myriad of sensors (such as acceleration sensors, pressure sensors, magnetometers) already in-built in our phones, we shared and explored the use of the app in conducting experiments and for classroom teaching.
With so much data being collected during the experiment, teachers are introduced to elements of computational thinking when processing the data. With the expertise of NIE Assoc Prof Paul Lee and MOE ETD Lawrence Wee Lookang, we explored the potential and limitations of using the smartphones as a learning tool for students as well as using real-world data already available on the web. Lookang also shared his experiences using real-world NASA data to create a simulation.
