2019 marks 150 years of the Periodic Table, and 100 years since founding of IUPAC

2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the development of the Periodic Law of the Elements independently by Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer, as well as 100th anniversary of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

IUPAC was established in 1919 after the First World War to develop universally-accepted terms to communicate and share scientific data and research. It plays a key role in curating the periodic table – it critically evaluates the data it contains, which do change as new scientific information becomes available, and runs the process used to select names and symbols for newly discovered elements.

To celebrate these anniversaries, IUPAC will be hosting an online quiz about the Periodic Table of the Elements. The global Periodic Table Challenge will open on 8 Jan 2019, and is available till the end of 2019.
