The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) published a disquieting report highlighting how human activities may culminate in the extinction of about 1 million animal and plant species in the coming decades. This report, which took 3 years to compile was the amalgamation of findings from 145 expert authors from 50 countries and contributions from 310 other authors as well as an assessment of changes that have taken place over the past five decades.
The summary of this worrying report was approved at the 7th session of the IPBES Plenary, meeting (29 April -- 4 May) in Paris and is a stark reminder to countries and governments around the work to make a difference before it might be too late.
