Salamander-like regenerative abilities in humans

Researchers from Duke Health have discovered that humans actually share a similar ability as Salamanders in the regeneration of cartilage in joints. This cartilage repair mechanism was also found to be more active in ankle joints than hips. This discovery could explain why hip injuries typically take longer to recover than ankle injuries.

Interestingly, researchers found that the age of proteins have a correlation to regenerative capacity and microRNAs were involved in this repair process in which activity of these microRNAs was higher in animals with regenerative capabilities.
