Mucus power!

Researchers from MIT have discovered that branched sugar molecules called glycans found in mucus can curtail bacteria from communicating with each other as well as prevent them from causing harmful infections. Interestingly, within mucus that is produced by our body, hundreds of different glycans exist. This new study provides new knowledge about mucus as it was previously understood to only act as a physical barrier and provide lubrication on mucosal membranes.

So next time if you happen to fall sick again, do appreciate how beneficial your mucus is in your fight against pathogens.
