Connecting Evolution & Climate Change

Fellow teachers, do you yearn to try new things in your classroom in 2019?

I would like to recommend you an inquiry and investigation lesson package that aims to develop the understanding of the impact climate change can have on microevolution in contemporary populations using Drosophila as an example. Summarising from this article, the lesson package will provide students the opportunity to think about the following questions:

  • Why does climate change affect some species more than others?

  • What types of natural selection might occur as a result of climate change?

You can read the strategy discussed in this article, Drowsy Drosophila: Rapid Evolution in the Face of Climate Change. If you are interested to implement this lesson, the detailed instructions can be found here and the assessment of learning material can be found here.

Lastly, if you have the constraint of implementing the hands-on component, do not fret about it! The authors of the lesson package do have sample data for you! I also have a video that illustrates the chill coma assay to recommend you.
