Autophagy can actually stop cancer

Always thought that autophagy is a cellular recycling process within the cell? Yes it certainly is, but in addition to that, scientists from Salk Institute have found that autophagy is able to promote cell death and prevent the initiation of cancer.

With these findings, it shows that apoptosis, which is also known as programmed cell death, is not the only mechanism that cells may employ to destroy pre-cancerous cells. This study also paves the way for more research on this tumour-suppressing pathway via autophagy.
